Solidarity with defense of democracy in Honduras

To the Teachers, Students and all the People of Honduras:

The Initiative for Democratic Education in the Americas (IDEA), a hemispheric alliance of teacher, student and research organizations, extends its solidarity with the massive actions in Honduras rejecting electoral fraud and calling for respect for the popular will; through marches, rallies, and cacerolazos in all neighborhoods, as a conscious and collective response to the state of siege decreed by the current regime.

At the same time, we are deeply concerned by the wave of repression that the government of Juan Orlando Hernández (JOH) has unleashed. We consider this attack against democracy and the rights of the people unacceptable.

We join from the international community the denunciations of the clear inconsistencies in the counting of votes legitimately issued by the population; a procedure promoted since the November 26 election by Honduras’ Supreme Electoral Tribunal, which has submitted itself to the interests of JOH and related sectors.

We highlight the actions of Human Rights organizations and international observers in defense of a transparent electoral process. We express our rejection of the murders, persecution, capture, torture and other repressive actions against the Honduran people, implemented by the armed forces; which now includes actions against police that have refused to continue repressing the people.

As IDEA, we urge the regime in Honduras to suspend all repressive action against the people who raise their voices against electoral fraud, and to respect the decision of the majority.

We will be attentive to the actions that call upon us to reinforce, from our different spaces, the calls for solidarity in defense of the life and rights of the Honduran people.

The people united will never be defeated!
